Wait 5-7 minutes, then get into the shower and rinse it off with more warm-hot water. Start with a dime-sized amount of castor oil and rub it between your hands to distribute it and warm the oil a bit, which will make it even easier to spread through your hair. Then, smooth over hair to keep flyaways down, or, if you have curly hair, work through your curls, starting from the bottom of your hair and moving upward. You can add 1-2 tablespoons of castor oil to your conditioning bottle and shake it up, or you could bring a teaspoon of castor oil into the shower and combine it with your conditioner in your hand.

We love Shea Moisture for their moisturizing line of hair products, and this option is no different. According to reviews, it makes hair shiny with just a few drops, and one drop can be used to effectively moisturize your entire face, too. Both Ruggeri and Dr. Clay agree that it’s a good idea to wash the oil out—not doing this can make your strands feel excessively greasy and heavy, and it can also make styling your hair more challenging. “Finish off with a clarifying shampoo and nourishing conditioner,” Ruggeri says. She’s spent her career editing and writing about health, wellness, beauty, fashion, and food for Martha Stewart Living, Martha Stewart Weddings, Bridal Guide, Good Housekeeping, and more.

Castor oil for hair

“Castor oil helps nourish hair, leaving strands feeling and looking stronger and healthier,” Marisa Garshick, MD, a board-certified dermatologist in NYC and New Jersey, adds. Both Dr. Amin and Kingsley agree that there are no quality scientific studies clearly showing a benefit of castor oil for hair growth. "The thinking is that castor oil increases blood flow to the scalp and reduces inflammation, both of which are beneficial for hair growth," Dr. Amin explains. However, as with any hair oil, it's important to start small and be aware of how your hair type responds to oil products. "For those with coarse, curly or dry hair, they may wish to apply castor oil to the ends of hair and leave in, as it’s a fairly light oil," says Dr. Marcus.

The benefits of hair oiling:

The ancient Egyptians were among the first to discover the benefits of castor oil. They used it as a natural moisturizer to keep their skin soft and supple in the harsh desert climate. Cleopatra herself was known to use castor oil as part of her beauty regimen. Taking too much castor oil may cause side effects, so it's important to talk with your healthcare provider about the right dosage for you. In adult males, an appropriate castor oil dose is 15 to 60 milliliters (mL) a day when used as a laxative.

For maximum benefit, I leave the treatment on for several hours or overnight. After applying, I use a shower cap or towel to avoid getting the oil on furniture or a pillow. I prefer to make my own, but there are some pre-made options (this is a good one that I’ve tried in the past). Dr. Clay is a board certified dermatologist who studied at Dillard University.

On the other hand, if you want a richer formula, mix castor oil with olive oil for a major deep-conditioning hair treatment (definitely skip this one on fine or low-porosity hair, though). FWIW, rosemary oil has also been studied for hair growth and loss, showing promising results (but more research def needs to be done on humans to prove anything). Dr. Cheung pointed to a 2015 study that compared rosemary oil extract to minoxidil when used on men with genetic androgen-related hair loss and the effects at three and six months had very few differences. Patients also noticed less irritation and itchiness with rosemary oil, since it's naturally anti-inflammatory. Consider dripping a few drops of a rosemary oil-based scalp serum once a day to help soothe your scalp and potentially boost hair growth over time.

Castor oil for eyelashes and eyebrows

Some of the benefits are thought to come from ricinoleic acid, an anti-inflammatory fatty acid that boasts antimicrobial and antioxidant properties. If you struggle with dry skin, he recommends applying castor oil to your skin before bed, or mixing with your go-to moisturizer to use once or twice a day. Castor oil is a thick vegetable oil that’s extracted from the bean of the tropical castor plant (or ricinus communis, if you want to get horticultural). "Castor oil is on the thicker side and can make the scalp greasy," Dr. Amin says.

What are the benefits of castor oil for hair?

Remove any makeup or dirt from your eyelashes and eyebrows with a gentle cleanser. "Castor oil comes from the seeds of a castor bean plant known as Ricinus communis," says Dominic Burg, MD, chief scientist and hair biologist at Evolis Professional. "It's considered to be poisonous, but the oil extracted from the seeds is quite beneficial for the hair."

She’s loved all things health and wellness since starting her bi-weekly podcast Pancreas Pals—a series all about the highs and lows of living life with type 1 diabetes. When not podcasting, she spends most of her time curled up with a good book or watching a period piece on BBC. From helping hair grow to increasing its density, it seems there’s nothing castor oil can’t do, but what does the science say? If split ends are a hair concern, she recommends applying it on ends as the last step of the styling process to smooth cuticles and prevent splits from continuing higher up on strands. Your hair can grow up to half an inch per month, as hairstylist Patricia Williams has previously told Cosmo.

However, always test a small skin area first to make sure you’re not allergic, and always dilute it in a carrier oil like olive oil. Unlike commercial products, it contains no harmful additives and is suitable for the face and body. However, it may cause allergic reactions in some individuals, so always dilute it with a carrier oil like coconut oil before using it, and do a small skin patch test first before using it on larger skin areas. Finally, it should go without saying that there are no natural remedies that can shrink tumors.

Because of this, you should consult your healthcare provider before using castor oil. Also, parents should consult their pediatrician before giving castor oil to children. Some people also use castor oil for skin care treatment for wrinkles and dry skin. Castor oil is considered an occlusive moisturizer, which means it creates a barrier to protect the skin and locks in moisture to prevent dry skin. The antioxidants in castor oil also support the keratin in hair and help make hair stronger, smoother, and less frizzy. When using castor oil for hair, be sure to start with only a small amount because too much can make your hair greasy.

And there’s a good reason it’s so noteworthy in the beauty arena for both skin and hair. Plus, it also contains high concentrations of fatty acids, which naturally have emollient benefits to hydrate and soothe the skin, scalp, and hair. Even though some people regularly use castor oil as part of their hair care routine, there’s no scientific evidence that castor oil helps promote hair health, stimulates hair growth, or reduces hair loss.

If you're interested in growing longer, stronger hair, chances are you've come across castor oil in your search. The ingredient dates back to Ancient Egypt, and is still prized for its beauty benefits. Castor oil is pretty hydrating, and can be used on hair and lashes to moisturize the hair and prevent breakage, says Philip B., founder of Philip B. Haircare.

Castor Oil: 4 Benefits and Uses

Since then, in addition to practicing dermatology, she has founded her own skincare line, Maei MD. Mix four parts of a carrier oil (jojoba or coconut oil both work) with one part castor oil. “Castor oil tends to have a moisturizing and nourishing effect on the hair, so typically those with dry, brittle, or curly hair may benefit most from use,” Dr. Luke says.

It's a natural vegetable oil, so it will biodegrade in the environment and will keep your locks moisturized while you swim. Here's how you can take advantage of the powerful attributes of castor oil in your homemade hair care products to fight frizz, condition your strands, moisturize your scalp, and protect your hair. There's also anecdotal evidence to suggest it can be effective on the eyelashes and eyebrows.

Castor Oil Benefits

Studies indicate that the ricinoleic acid in castor oil protects the scalp and shaft of the hair from fungal and microbial infections. After being extracted from the seeds, the oil is filtered and steamed to remove ricin, a toxic component that could cause rancidity. What’s left is a vegetable oil rich in compounds such as ricinoleic acid, linoleic acid, stearic acid, proteins, antioxidants and more. The thing about castor oil is that it's very dense, so it's important to use it on your hair correctly and sparingly. "It doesn't spread very well, so it takes forever to wash off, which can have a negative impact on the hair and scalp health," says Catalá.

There is not enough research to know if castor oil is safe for breastfeeding people.

This may not be a large jar, but rest assured that it will last you for months to come. "Castor oil can help to condition hair strands and increase shine and hydration," explains Dr. Rebecca Marcus, a board-certified dermatologist and founder of MaeiMD. Aside from being anti-inflammatory, castor oil has a few other noteworthy properties.

Benefits of Castor Oil for Hair Growth (and More)

But that’s if you’re prioritizing nutritious foods, incorporating positive coping mechanisms for stress, and keeping your scalp and hair consistently moisturized. And even then, it can take up to 90 days to see a long-term change in the health of your hair, explains Hill. Castor oil is a vegetable oil derived from castor beans that’s usually colorless, but can also be yellow or deep brown, depending on how it’s made. Jamaican black castor oil is one of the more popular variations and has a thicker consistency, due to the fact that it’s boiled with ash, giving it a warm, roasted scent. If you want to use castor oil on your eyebrows or eyelashes, be very careful not to get any of the oil in your eyes.

What are the disadvantages of castor oil for hair?

If you're using castor oil to treat a specific health condition, such as joint pain or constipation, be sure to follow the recommended dosage and application instructions carefully. Now that you know the many benefits of castor oil, you may be wondering how to incorporate it into your daily care routine. The good news is that castor oil is incredibly versatile and easy to use, making it a simple addition to your existing regimen. Castor oil's high content of fatty acids also effectively lightens dark spots and hyperpigmentation. These fatty acids help to inhibit excess melanin production, the pigment responsible for dark spots and uneven skin tone.

"Also, because it increases blood flow to the scalp, more nutrients are being delivered to the scalp circulation." While there's no real research to suggest that castor oil can directly cause hair growth, Phillip B. Says it's possible that castor oil can contribute to the overall health of your hair, which can, in turn, help you retain length. If you’re considering applying pure castor oil to your eyebrows and eyelashes, Dr. Green advises using caution when applying it to delicate areas such as your eyes. If you’re set on using the oil in any of these areas, a cotton swab is an easy way to control the amount.

Castor oil should not cause these side effects when applied to your hair. However, you'll want to ensure you or others in your home do not accidentally swallow the castor oil. Diluting the castor oil can also tone down the scent, which many people find unpleasant. Mix one part of castor oil with two parts of another carrier oil to dilute it. Starting at the bottom of your hair, comb the warm oil mix through your hair. Do it quickly and wrap in a towel that you don't mind getting oil-stained.

Dr. Garshick points out that although castor oil can be used by all hair types, it is especially good for those with dry hair. But the condition of your scalp plays an important role when deciding to use castor oil on your hair or not.

It uses basil leaf and baobab oils to help break down oils and gunk on my scalp, as well as balance my scalp microbiome. Castor oil is approved by the FDA as a temporary treatment for constipation, but it isn't suitable for long-term use. If you're allergic to the castor plant, you could have itching, swelling, or rashes if you apply the oil to your skin. Castor oil is a thick, odorless oil made from the seeds of the castor plant. Its use dates back to ancient Egypt, where it was likely used as fuel for lamps as well as for medicinal and beauty purposes.

When you are ready, hop in the shower, remove the towel, and rinse the oil out with plain water first. Your hair should feel softer, silkier, and less frizzy after this treatment. In fact, using castor oil in your hair could cause a rare condition called felting, which is when your hair becomes so tangled it has to be cut off. An overgrowth of Candida fungi can lead to a condition called denture stomatitis, an infection that leads to inflammation, redness, and irritation in the mouth. Castor oil can help promote wound healing by creating a moist environment and preventing drying out.

But there's no science to back up claims that it treats dandruff or promotes hair growth. In other words, “it’s difficult to draw conclusions on how influential these properties will be on our actual skin,” Dr. Hollmig explains. Still, there are some science-backed reasons to consider adding castor oil to your routine, like the following. Some people use castor oil to grow longer hair or to treat hair loss, also known as alopecia. It’s marketed as a treatment for dry scalp and other scalp conditions as well. Explains that if you looked at the molecular structure of castor oil, you'd see that it's a glycerol with a long-chain fatty acid.

Kenya's film and classification board (KFCB) has called for the suspension of several US-produced children's programs running on channels provided by TV company MultiChoice. The board said the cartoons featured "disturbing content glorifying homosexual behavior" which was not suitable for children. The series debuted on Nickelodeon on May 2, 2016, with new episodes premiering every weekday that month.[21] The first trailer for the series premiered on March 13, 2016.[22] The series also aired on AFN Family. Luan lives by the motto “a joke a day keeps the sadness away.” She spreads laughter wherever she goes, ensuring that no one stays blue for long. She uses her comedy to bring joy and laughter to those around her, making the world a happier place.

Her mind works in mysterious ways, and she always keeps her audience guessing. It can brighten even the gloomiest of days and is recognized by her family and friends from miles away. In the mini-comic "Deuces Wild!," Luan interprets the superheroine called "The Joker," who is also one of Ace Savvy's sidekicks. In the comic, she is summoned by Savvy (played by Lincoln) alongside the rest of Savvy's deck (played by the rest of her sisters) to help him and One-Eyed Jack (played by Clyde) to defeat the gas monster.

In "White Hare," where Lincoln imagined how difficult it is to live with 15 extra sisters, Luan is a rabbit named Bebe. Like Luan, Bebe is a comedian who tells jokes to lighten the situation and, like the human counterparts, none of her siblings find her funny. In an alternate universe where the sisters are brothers, Luan is a boy named Lane. Like Luan, Lane is a comedian who tells jokes to lighten the situation.

Luan holds comedy workshops for her siblings and friends, teaching them the art of joke-telling and the importance of finding joy through laughter. Luan is part of a comedy group called “The Punny Pals.” Alongside her fellow comedians, she performs hilarious sketches and skits that are guaranteed to make the audience burst into laughter. In this article, we’ll dive into 23 interesting facts about Luan Loud, from her favorite pranks to her hidden talents. Whether you’re an avid fan of “The Loud House” or just getting familiar with the show, these facts will give you a deeper understanding of the character that brings laughter to every episode.

When Lily fist pumps with a "Yes!", Luan realizes that Lily deliberately pranked her family to motivate her to come out of retirement. Touched by this, Luan hugs her baby sister in gratitude, while Lynn Sr. realizes in horror that now, the family has somehow raised two pranksters. The family goes to confront Luan to tell her to stop with her pranks, but Luan tells them she is innocent, saying she retired from April Fools pranks. However, the family thinks she is lying and prepare to leave, but Lincoln realizes that the pranks that hit them are much different from Luan's usual ones, like how some of the materials that were used were only done during a specific time of their lives.

Luan L. Loud is one of Lincoln's ten sisters and the main characters in The Loud House. She is the fourth-oldest of the Loud children, at 14 years old in seasons 1 through 4, and 15 years old from season 5 onwards. She is an optimistic, fun-loving girl with a fondness for comedy and almost always delivers a pun whenever she speaks, which she often follows up with a hearty chuckle and saying "Get it?" (much to her siblings' annoyance). She also loves pulling pranks on her siblings, though her pranks become downright sadistic on April Fool's Day. She wears braces, has squirt-flowers on her shirt and shoes, and owns a ventriloquist dummy named Mr. Coconuts. At 15 years old, Luan is the fourth oldest child of the Loud family, and the second-youngest of Lincoln's five older sisters.

While waiting for him to be fixed, she starts using Lola as her replacement dummy, Princess Sassypants, and also starts ignoring calls to pick him up. Eventually, Lynn Sr. picks up the repaired Mr. Coconuts, who is jealous that Luan has "replaced" him with Lola. In "Party Down", the two of them attend Lori's sophisticated party, but gets kicked out after telling laundry based puns in reaction to Luna getting kicked out. She uses him to practice ventriloquism, and sometimes just likes to hang around with him. This page describes all of Luan Loud's relationships with her family and friends.

When Luan was eight years old, she wore a sleeveless yellow dress with a checkerboard pattern and white undershirt underneath, light pink socks that were worn all the way up, and black Mary Jane shoes.[16] She also wore pigtails in two yellow scrunchies. The two protruding hairs sticking out from the center of her forehead were also backward and more curly. Her eyebrows were also less curved and rather pointy, while her nose was less pointy and more curved. Her swimsuit is a yellow one piece with one of her gag-squirt flowers. Her nightwear is just a yellow nightgown or a yellow and white nightshirt with matching pants and white bunny slippers.

Likewise, Luan gets jealous of Lucy surpassing her lifelong dream of becoming the youngest performer of Royal Woods Theater and becomes obsessively possessive of her upon discovery of the news. However, instead of trying to sabotage her moment in the spotlight, Luan eventually drops her jealousy and gets Lucy to perform at the theater, since Luan herself was the inspiration for Lucy's poem. She also can be seen expressing these emotions in, “Doll Day Afternoon” when during the climax, she decided to give Mr. Coconuts back to his original owner, Calvin Coconuts, since she thought it was for the best. With no more suspects to interrogate, Luan, Amy and Benny arrive back to the auditorium to tell Mrs. Bernardo that the trail went cold. Suddenly, Rex arrives to pick up Amy, and when he extends his hand, Amy realizes that he has a red mark on his hand that resembles rope burn.

Lynn Loud Sr.'s mother is a minor character in The Loud House. She is the wife of Leonard Loud, the Loud kids' paternal grandmother, mother of Lynn Sr. and mother-in-law of Rita. He has a pointy long nose like his brother and father and slicked down brown hair. He wears a matching light blue track suit with a white line on the sides and white sneakers.

Lana

He gave the first issue of David Steele to his son for his twelfth birthday. Much like Rita, she is a very kind and caring mother for her children. She is also shown to care just as much for her nieces and nephew. Like his father and brother, Lance is very emotional and driven to tears easily.

Lisa Loud

Not much is known about her, except that she's a deceased relative of the Loud family. Lucy still treats her as a living person, which indicates that, (assuming Lucy and her siblings knew her when she was still alive) she and Lucy were very close. She is the wife of Lance Loud and the Loud kids' aunt. She is also the mother of Shane, Shelby and Shiloh Loud. Lance is very proud of his muscular build and energetic life.

Lily

He looked almost the same as Lynn Sr. but with a full head of hair with a grey strip in it and side burns. He wore a brown jacket with gold trim, a blue kilt, a black belt, fishnet socks and black shoes with golden buckles. She wears a pearl-pink, old-fashioned, long dress with a V-shaped cut on her chest, a long-sleeved shirt, knee-long socks in black and white horizontal stripes, and purple shoes.

She wore a white veil with gold trim, and a sleeveless dress with a blue tartan bodice, lace around the neckline, and a long white skirt. Shirley is a very repulsive woman, with fair skin, curly red hair and a mole on her left cheek. She wears an olive toned dress with light green spots, three golden bracelets on her right arm, olive green studded earrings, pink nail polish and pink lipstick. She looked almost identical to Lily, except her hair was combed down and she wore a lacy blue tartan dress and tan loafers. Mee-Maw is the Loud kids' grandmother (it is unknown which side of the family she is on or who she was married to), who was first mentioned in "Crashed Course".

During Lynn Sr.'s childhood, Lance was apparently the favorite child of their father Leonard (or at least Lynn Sr. believes). In his youth, he sported a hat that bore a strong resemblance to Lana's.

Lola

As such, he would mess around with his brother Lynn when they were receiving Christmas gifts, which eventually caused them to avoid seeing each other. However, he is shown to be a caring father and uncle. Shirley is the Loud kids' aunt (it is unrevealed what side of the family she is on), who first appears in the episode "Picture Perfect". In "Snow Bored", Lucy fruitlessly calls her great-grandmother to save her and Lynn from Lisa's incoming big snowball. Great Grandma Harriet is a minor character, and part of the Loud family.

She looked identical to Lynn except she wears a bun, and wore a white blouse, a leather jerkin, a blue tartan skirt, white socks, and black shoes. She looked identical to Luna, and wore a dark purple cloak, a brown belt, and a blue tartan dress with white, loose sleeves. She looked a lot like Lori, but with different clothes.

Lucille's cause of death, along with that of the rest of her family, remains unknown. Her striped clothing is white with black stripes in her organic form, but black with white stripes in her ghost form. Leni's ancestral double is known to have been just as fashion-oriented as Leni is. According to Morag, she was known in Loch Loud for her fashion skills, and her ghost is seen admiring a dress along with Leni and Scott. She is also shown to have been just as ditzy as Leni, since in life, she specified that her boyfriend Scott came from Scotland to her siblings and parents, who all already knew.

Lucille and her family used to live the high life, with her brother as the Duke of Loch Loud. But then, 400 years before the events of the movie, the whole family was driven away by Aggie, the castle caretaker, who only wanted peace and quiet. Later, the family tried going back home to Loch Loud until Aggie brainwashed Lolo the dragon into taking away the Duke’s crown.

How to do an Arts & Crafts interior

arts and crafts interior design

You can get modern with your decor and color choices while maintaining the woodwork and its intricacies. Some of the leading designers and architects in the Arts and Crafts Movement included Augustus Pugin, William Morris, and John Ruskin. The characteristics of Arts and Crafts homes can be seen to have influenced many subsequent house styles – such as in the home above which has elements from the period. Even though the intent of Morris and his fellow artists was to bring quality design to all people, in practice the opposite happened.

Miles Redd and David Kaihoi, the pair behind New York–based Redd Kaihoi, are known for their unique aesthetic vision characterized by high and low, a strong sense of color, and a traditional approach with modern gestures. Mexican-French interior designer Hugo Toro prides himself on his attention to detail. That focus is expressed in a spate of projects simultaneously sleek and imbued with old-world glamour, like London’s bar and restaurant Booking Office 1869 and the home we feature in our Summer 2022 issue. After cutting his teeth at Rem Koolhaas’s firm OMA, Hannes Peer launched his own architecture and design practice in 2009. Over the past 13 years he’s created spaces showcasing a reverence for history and rigorous research (like the Milan apartment on our September 2021 cover), with projects in China, Paris, and Japan.

Understanding the arts and crafts movement

Morris & Co’s most popular collection is ‘Pure Morris’, which launched in 2016 and features neutral coloured, pared-back designs. ‘This range has taken Morris’s designs to a new audience who found the original colour palette did not work in their homes,’ says Clare. In May, Style Library is launching a collection in honour of May Morris, William’s youngest daughter, who was a very accomplished embroiderer and textile designer.

Below, we investigate Arts and Crafts house style – this prettiest of house styles – and how to make the most of it. In this detail of the ceiling, we observe inspiration from Japanese textiles, particularly Sashiko embroidery. The American designer Gustav Stickley began producing his version of the Morris Chair in the 1900s, achieving the design’s most iconic form. Today’s version of this mantra encourages us to only keep things that spark joy, as Marie Kondo would say.

His work is marked by a holistic approach that embraces the necessities of living. See for yourself, by touring two elegant Upper East Side buildings designed by Sofield’s firm. The Milan-based duo of Roberto Peregalli and Laura Sartori Rimini, known as Studio Peregalli, specializes in baronial rooms that are steeped in history. The firm’s American projects include a Manhattan apartment for Hamish Bowles and a Gramercy Park townhouse for artist John Currin. New York City–based Peter Marino is known for his commercial and retail designs as much as for his residential, and he has worked to redefine modern luxury worldwide with clients including Chanel, Dior, Louis Vuitton, and Bulgari. For decades, Jacques Grange has taken mixing traditional and contemporary design elements to a new dimension.

Design + Decorate

Katie Ridder has a dexterity with color palettes, a playful approach to mixing antiques and modern pieces, and an eye for unusual decorative accents. Ishka Designs, helmed by Anishka Clarke and Niya Bascom, is a Brooklyn-based interior design firm. Specializing in vacation properties, restaurants, and residences, the firm’s clean, minimalist aesthetic is on view in their restoration of a Brooklyn brownstone featured in our Summer 2022 issue. In his projects, James Huniford blends new and old, uniting found objects with refined materials in distinctive combinations and vignettes. His signature use of calming wall colors highlights the importance of objects, art, and furniture.

William Arthur Smith Benson was a metal worker, and he made this teapot with a machine. However, we can see Arts and Crafts clearly through the simple lines and very clean design. While most of the designers who get credit for the Arts and Crafts movement are men, there were many significant and brilliant female designers and artisans who moved it forward both aesthetically and politically. The combination of wood and iron is also a characteristic of both furniture and architecture in the Arts and Crafts period. The iron was used as pins and handles, and for most hardware on cabinets or tables.

In her toolbox are unexpected colors and a welcome readiness to work with items her clients already own, making her the go-to for every adventurous sentimentalist. Martyn Lawrence Bullard may have been born in London, but he was clearly destined for Hollywood. The actor turned interior designer previously starred on Bravo’s Million Dollar Decorators, and a love of bright color and bold pattern is evident in his work.

If you’re looking for a home that feels quaint, traditional, and cozy, look no further than an Arts and Crafts home. These detail-forward homes date back to the 19th century, and even today still resonate with the current cottagecore movement, thanks to their angular exteriors and segmented rooms within. By the beginning of the 20th century, young designers had moved on from the intricate forms of Art Nouveau and Arts and Crafts.

For the past 15 years, her relaxed decorating approach has resonated with clients in both the U.K. The Arts and Crafts aesthetic inspired by nature extended also to their color palette. The interiors of The Red House are good examples of the sort of warm, rich, earthy tones favored by the craftsmen – colors that would complement the beauty of natural wood. When it comes to arts and crafts decor there are so many ways to channel the look.

The Mughal Empire stands as one of history’s most opulent periods known to nurture a rich tapestry of art and architecture that offers a... Even though the first wallpaper printing machine was patented in 1839, William Morris continued to have his wallpaper printed the traditional way. He used carved woodblocks to print on long rolls of paper which were then hung to dry before the next color could be printed on top. The relationship between craftsman and object was a key idea of the Arts and Crafts movement.

Looking back to Arts and Crafts for inspiration, we can see the attention to detail, the quality materials, and the beauty of the mimesis of nature. The melding of Gothic and Renaissance Revival, Art Nouveau, and Edwardian styles all happening concurrently was combined with the hand-made approach and the downscale materials. The leaf design of some artisans was so unique that now historians will use this as a sign to mark their handiwork.

An “artistic bungalow” of the Arts & Crafts era, modeled on an actual planbook model that was available as a kit home. Ground-hugging and with deep eaves, the bungalow promises cozy shelter; the pergola porch blends indoors and out. Exaggerated structure—brackets, battered piers, belt courses—provide the only ornamentation. If you’re a design connoisseur (or an average enthusiast of aesthetically pleasing items), there is a huge chance you’ve heard of the... Believing that society was headed toward an impersonal, mechanized future, Morris and the early advocates of Arts and Crafts entered a quest to return to a simpler, more fulfilling way of life.

'I think there is often a misconception that arts and crafts interiors are heavy, dark, and cluttered (sometimes true!). Stephen Sills has an extensive knowledge of design history and an intuitive grasp of today’s needs. He specializes in transforming interiors into timeless environments for modern living.

The Timeless Prints of William Morris & the Arts and Crafts Movement

Rectilinear just means straight lines, and while there are some curving lines in different types of Arts and Crafts design, it is predominated by straight lines, often forming geometric patterns. Eventually, the movement swept across Europe and North America, and emerged in Japan in the form of the Mingei movement, with the pillar of being “ordinary people’s crafts”. If you love entertaining then bold wallpapers are perfect for bringing wow-factor and a sense of occasion to dining rooms.

What design styles did the Arts and Crafts movement use?

arts and crafts interior design

Unfortunately, this meant that the prices of these beautiful objects were also high. Morris and his fellow artists believed that the key to producing human contentment, as well as beautiful items, was the connection forged between an artisan and his work. However, Arts and Crafts designers were looking for more than just the production of pretty objects. They were looking for design that integrated exteriors and interiors in a unified whole because they believed that simple, good design improved a person’s character. From wood to glass, stone and iron, the arts and crafts movement emphasized working with high quality materials that would stand the test of time.

Rectilinear Lines

His have gone on to be printed on H&M tops and dresses, and become ubiquitous across the world. Morris had his wallpapers printed by hand, using carved, pear woodblocks loaded with natural, mineral-based dyes, and pressed down with the aid of a foot-operated weight. Thus, it combined the natural inclination of the designers of the period with the working class and socialist ideologies many of them held, in the modest size and economical design. In both colour and proportions, symmetry was an important feature of Arts and Crafts design. From entire homes, to lamps, the design featured geometry that creates even proportions and a sense of balance. In a home, doors would be wood with iron hinges and handles, and similarly floors would be wood with iron grates.

Medieval and Renaissance styling were the overwhelming design motif with necklaces, pendants, clasps, and buckles the most popular and useful items produced. Hand-painted enamel as a decorative element was an important mechanism for separating the handmade from machine-made. Today, jewelers have taken the handmade approach to the next level, molding out of soft wax molten creations that then get turned into silver and gold. The fireplace was a large feature of the Arts and Crafts home, so naturally there was always a fireplace, if not two.

Wood and Iron

Pairing this darker hue with the warmth of the earthy tones creates a welcoming interior with depth and interest. The Arts and Crafts style, also commonly known as the Mission style, was popular in the late 1800s through the 1920s. The Arts and Crafts movement was a reaction against the mass-produced and ornate Victorian furniture of that time. This year's rankings have introduced an Economic Mobility Index, which measures the economic status change for low-income students. ACT/SAT scores have been removed from rankings to reflect a general de-emphasis on test scores in the college admissions process. In addition to running her former eponymous firm, whose works include New York’s Marianne Boesky Gallery and 40 East End Avenue, she became the first woman dean of the Yale School of Architecture in 2016.

What is arts and crafts decor?

‘The heavily patterned William Morris wallpaper could easily dominate the room, but the balance is maintained with the addition of a large statement four poster bed in simple oak. The painted chest brings out the warmer tones from the wallpaper without fighting it,’ he adds. If wall-to-wall pattern is too much, why not make a feature of your windows with curtains and blinds in arts and crafts inspired fabrics? Featuring deer, birds and foliage, this Balmoral design from Warner House has a distinct arts and crafts feel.

At the heart of arts and crafts interiors lies the celebration of hand-made craftsmanship. The designs often draw from medieval influences, emphasizing the use of natural materials and artisanal techniques. Former set designer Ariel Ashe and architect Reinaldo Leandro’s New York City firm Ashe Leandro mixes contemporary luxury and natural materials to create open, timeless spaces. Projects include work for Liev Schreiber, Seth Meyers, and the New York townhouse on our Summer 2022 cover.

The Arts and Crafts movement spanned from about 1880 to 1920 in Europe and the United States. It was a return to hand-crafted materials and simple furniture after a period of mass-produced factory furnishings. As a response to the withering quality of homes in the mid 19th century, designers began working to construct houses that had a more ornate look with angled rooftops, columns, porches, and beautified exteriors. Nature in all its glory was an endless source of inspiration for the Arts and Crafts interior design artists. Stylized depictions of nature enhanced the graphic appeal of the work while keeping it beautiful and familiar. Like other Arts and Crafts interior design objects, this one is very minimalistic, relying on the bright color and the effects of the glaze as the only decoration.

The architect has spent the past 10 years cultivating a studious sensibility that still radiates warmth and character. In addition to a Manhattan residence featured on our January/February 2021 cover, Chen is slated to break ground on his first health-care and civic projects in Brooklyn. In 1998, Alexa Hampton took over the world-famous firm of her father, Mark Hampton. She is a specialist in maximalism and has completed a wide range of designs for domestic and international projects, from New York City to Hangzhou, China.

To this end, they promoted and celebrated activities such as wood carving, block printing, and even embroidery. The Arts and Crafts movement was deeply concerned with notions about the purpose of society and the treatment of individuals within that society. They were also concerned about the role of industry, architecture, urban development, and the part that man needed to play within this development.

With a wide range of complimentary and specialty restaurants, you will have more dining options than days of your cruise. Enjoy an authentic Brazilian churrascaria experience at Moderno, spend an elegant night at our vibrant Italian ristorante, La Cucina, or enjoy traditional flavors with a modern twist at Los Lobos. NCL automatically adds a $12 service charge for every day you are on board. This is divided to all the wait and room staff, including your room steward, butler, or concierge. A 15% gratuity is also added automatically on every extra charge for drinks, specialty restaurant dinners and spa services.

Deck

The restaurant looks like one of the old steakhouses in Europe. Red wood chairs with leather cushions, red wood tables, place settings (but no table clothes), and black and white photographs on the walls. Overall, we give mixed marks for the food on the Norwegian Dawn. We were disappointed with the quality of dishes at the two main restaurants, Venetian and Aqua, and even the dishes at some of the extra-charge specialty restaurants failed to impress us.

In-room Entertainment & Services

From top to bottom and from bow to stern, Norwegian Dawn has enough onboard activities to fill every minute of your cruise. Indulge in a refreshing swim, cocktail or ice cream treat at The Oasis Pool. And when all is said and done, enjoy a pamper session at Mandara Spa. With so much to do, we’ll always have you coming back for more.

Lunch / Dinner

We found this to be a typical experience and would probably skip it if you’ve done this on other ships. If you find yourself with a dining credit to spare, it’s a fun activity with expected food quality. Paying for it, however, doesn’t seem like a great value. See the Teppanyaki Menu As for the sushi, it’s generally good, but being a sushi snob, it’s tough for me to pay real money for cruise ship sushi these days. If you’re traveling with kids, you’ll find that the Dawn is a decent choice for families. Even though a kids club exists, there aren’t many kid-friendly spaces on the ship like there are on newer larger cruise ships.

Cabin Description

We chose the coq au vin (chicken in red wine broth) for the main course. The chicken melted on the tongue, and the skin was delicious (yes, you really should try it). Only the onions in the sauce were a little too undercooked. Overall the food was disappointing at the Venetian, which is one of the ship’s two main dining rooms. Sink and mirror are in the middle, with the toilet on the right and the shower on the left. Handles to help passengers move around, are placed strategically all over the bathroom.

Mid-Ship Balcony

We found the food in many of the eateries to be on par with the chain restaurants found across America (think Olive Garden for Italian). The only restaurants that really impressed us were the Asian cuisine-serving Bamboo and French eatery Le Bistro (both of which come with an extra fee). Keep in mind that the two ships sail in widely different areas. The Carnival Magic is now deployed year-round in Galveston, Texas, making it a great choice for vacationers who live in Texas and nearby states who want to avoid having to fly somewhere for a getaway.

Spa, and Fitness on the Dawn

There are also two combos, Diamond and Ruby, with an assortment of nigiri, sashimi and rolls for the indecisive. La Cucina looks like a nice restaurant in the middle of Italy, with large paintings on the walls and tall windows, altogether a very pleasant ambiance. The staff tries to add to the spirit by greeting guests in Italian, though most of them are clearly not from Italy so it borders on the absurd. Desserts, like appetizers and main courses, change daily on the dinner menu.

Pancakes come in a pair with butter and blueberry maple syrup. The French toast was excellent, even though the toast was more of a cake at two inches high. The best breakfast dish we had was the smoked salmon with bagel, cream cheese, and onions. Important numbers such as guest service, housekeeping and room service are saved on the phone. Calling home is possible, for a fee, and cell phones work on the ship but you'll likely have to pay roaming fees.

We did manage to take some pictures of the pool area and the Teens Club, but the other areas were not accessible. The ship offers all kinds of activities for kids from 2 to 17, like Freestyle Play Time, Dodge Ball, tournaments and other games. The Havana Lounge it the only place in the ship (other than in cabins) where smoking is allowed. Cigars and some prime malt whisky, port wine and sherry are kept in a humidor. The same drinks are sold in Gatsby’s too, if you’re a non smoker.

The queen-size bed took up most of the space in this small room. The sink and mirror are in the middle, with the toilet on the right and the shower on the left. Handles to help passengers move around are placed strategically all over the bathroom. Another problem is the closet size, large enough for two, but three people's luggage might be stretching it. Second, if the sofa bed is unfolded it's difficult to get on the balcony.

The Venetian dining room is what is typical of cruise ships this age with large open spaces, tons of tables, and windows overlooking the ocean. Overall, the NCL Dawn cruise experience is one of relaxation, comfort, and simple (but good) entertainment. You’ll have plenty of options for how to spend your time, whether you want to kick back and relax by the pool or take part in activities and excursions. With great food, decent entertainment, and full NCL amenities, it’s a fantastic choice for anyone looking to experience a quality cruise vacation. Balcony cabins have a sitting area (dressing table), 2 lower beds (convertible), walk-in closet, bathroom (shower).

Slanted floor-to-ceiling windows in both the living and sleeping areas offer stunning views. In contrast, the Owner’s Suites with balconies feature a walk-in closet in the bathroom, a second guest half-bath by the entrance, and a smaller bedroom space. One balcony offers a dining table and chairs, while the other balcony provides loungers.
