Norwegian Cruise Line Norwegian Dawn Reviews

dawn norwegian cruise line review

The Dawn has two dining spaces called Aqua and Venetian. The main restaurants are primarily open for dinner with the Venetian being open for breakfast and sometimes open for lunch. The last thing to be aware of is the rampant nickel-and-diming onboard.

We had fish and chips ashore, when the ship was anchored in Bermuda. That included several pieces of fish and thick cut fries. For a cover charge of $15 per person, passengers can eat as much sushi as they want at the Sushi & Sashimi Bar. It's open all afternoon until 10.30 pm, and there is no reservation needed.

Because these are mid-ship staterooms, you'll have easy access to everything on board. Balcony cabins are 160+/- square feet, plus an additional 37-square-foot veranda. These staterooms have a small pullout sofa, which can sleep one person though it’s not the comfiest place for sleeping.

Breakfast

Most Suites and all Balcony cabins feature floor-ceiling sliding doors opening to a private veranda with lounge furniture (1 round table and 2 chairs /higher grades Suites have sunloungers). You can see all the furniture details on the NCL Dawn cabin floor plans in the table above. The separated men and lady's relaxation areas both have a panorama window with a beautiful view of the ocean.

In-room Entertainment & Services

Smokers and cigar aficionados shouldn't miss the Havana Club for hand-rolled premium cigars and drinks, especially the whiskeys and port. Like duty free shops found on most cruise ships, Tradewinds sells souvenirs, jewelry, cigarettes, and cigars. Some designer clothes and accessories are also available, but the choices are sparse. Prices start at $40 for designer handbags, $20 for knickknacks, such as cups, and $35 for a carton of cigarettes.

The signs still point the passengers to the old Library, there is not one that says the library is in the Internet Café for the duration of the renovation. The same thing goes for the deck plans you get at the Information desk. The Dawn has a handful of areas to sit and relax, a full spa, and a fully-stocked fitness center. The Venetian (deck 6 aft), offers à la carte breakfast, lunch and, dinner featuring traditional American cuisine. If you prefer a lido deck buffet, the Garden Café has an extensive choice, with eggs, salads, soups, pasta and sandwiches – along with a special kids-sized section.

There are four Owner’s Suites on Deck 12 forward, measuring 667 to 732 square feet. These suites may be large BUT, they do not have balconies! This may not bother some people, but many travelers that pay for a “suite” experience, will likely want a balcony. The bedroom has a vanity table, a closet (not walk-in), and a second TV. The huge bathroom includes double sinks, a whirlpool tub, a separate shower, and a toilet behind a closed door. L’Occitane toiletries are provided, alongside the standard Norwegian soap and shampoo dispensers.

They include two lower beds that convert into a queen-size bed and additional bedding to accommodate up to two more guests, as well as a big picture window for you to admire the view from. These connecting staterooms are perfect if you want to bring the kids along. They sleep up to three guests and include a sitting area, two lower beds that convert into a queen-size bed and a pull out sofa to accommodate one more.

If you prefer beer, the choices include Budweiser, Miller, Samuel Adams, Guinness, Heineken, and Fosters. Rice, black beans, fried sweet bananas, and garlic mashed potatoes are served on the side. The selection at the salad bar is plentiful, and includes red beets, tuna, hearts of palm, as well as asparagus and other vegetables. On busy days, however, it seems the wait staff is totally overwhelmed and the restaurant understaffed – we had to wait for half an hour for our food to arrive. Located in the Atrium on deck 8, the Blue Lagoon's decor is in-line with the rest of the ship's decor, lots of greens and blues with pink columns. It has more of a diner feel with a beautiful view to the Atrium and ocean.

However, with the Dawn not being equipped with large stages and Broadway-style production environments, the cutback on entertainment didn’t seem to negatively impact the Dawn. This is mostly due to the fact that the entertainment venue, “Stardust Theater”, is more traditional and hosts simpler types of old-school music, dance, and more simplified theatre-style performances. Expect performances like Michael Jackson’s tributes, the house band performing music through the decades, and well-known solo vocalists. The ship feels incredibly modern and updated in all public areas despite the age of the ship. The renovations and refits of the Dawn over the past years have made every space feel like you were on a nearly new ship. Almost no area was left untouched during the previous renovation.

Java Cafe offers coffee bar-style coffee and cakes during the day and beer and cocktails at night. Bimini Grill and Topsiders serve beer, daiquiris, margaritas, and piña coladas. The Havana Cigar Club is exactly what the name implies – a place for smoking and drinking good malt whiskys. There is a special occasion menu for room service that includes a selection of cold or deluxe hors d'oevres, a jumbo shrimp platter, Caspian sea caviar, and a collection of international cheeses with different breads.

Norwegian Dawn has everything a cruiser desires, making it a perfect option for a delightful getaway. Since May 2015, the Norwegian Cruise Line charges US$7,95 for room service dining. This is an extra service charge implemented fleetwide (including on the NCL Dawn ship). Passengers exempted from the new (uncommon for the industry) room service fee are only the occupants of “The Haven” suites. Still, as an exception, all passengers can order (for free) their room-service morning coffee and Continental Breakfast. After implementing the new service charge, NCL upgraded the room service menu, adding more hot food items for Breakfast and a wider food & drinks selection (available for ordering 24 hours a day).

My biggest disappointment was the seaday that preceded our crossing of the equator - a first for me - as there were no activities to mark it. I did have a meeting with Cruise director to talk about this and she said that the ship did not have the correct health and safety protocols in place to do anything. She said it would be impossible to produce certificates to mark the crossing but several days later a generic certificate was in fact delivered to each cabin. This was blamed on a high tide and a shallow navigation channel both factors that were known about in advance. There was an outbreak of some sort of gastro enteritis on the ship after about 3 days and restrictions in the buffet were still in place when we left the ship 18 days later. Both of us were ill so NCL made a profit from us as it cut down our appetites for food and drink.

On all four corner are hot tubs, for adults only, two of them with roofs. Near the pool is the Topsiders bar, which serves drinks and ice cream, and the Bimini Grill, which serves burgers and hot dogs. On one end of the pool area is a stage where, on sea days, a band plays Caribbean tunes. Some nights, the pool area turns into a party zone with a DJ, dance, and drinks. Le Bistro is one of Norwegian's high-end specialty restaurants, definitely the spot to celebrate an anniversary with a romantic dinner It is located on Deck 6 Midship, right by Gatsby's and La Cucina. Being one of the more sophisticated restaurants on the ship ($20 cover charge per person, excluding drinks) the expectations are high, but the restaurants lives up to it.

Behind these areas are the locker rooms with showers, saunas, and steam rooms. Before the renovations, these rooms were also available to the gym users. One deck above the pool you’ll find a number of sun chairs lined up and waiting. If you can’t find a place for your sun worshiping, just ask a crew member where to find more chairs, or try the Bimini Bar. A terrace right under the the bar provides more sun chairs, with view of the pool and the Garden villa. The Norwegian Dawn has an extensive wine list with selections from all over the world, available at all the restaurants.
