We had fish and chips ashore, when the ship was anchored in Bermuda. That included several pieces of fish and thick cut fries. Like duty free shops found on most cruise ships, Tradewinds sells souvenirs, jewelry, cigarettes, and cigars. Some designer clothes and accessories are also available, but the choices are sparse. Prices start at $40 for designer handbags, $20 for knickknacks, such as cups, and $35 for a carton of cigarettes.
The signs still point the passengers to the old Library, there is not one that says the library is in the Internet Café for the duration of the renovation. The renovations and refits of the Dawn over the past years have made every space feel like you were on a nearly new ship. Almost no area was left untouched during the previous renovation.
Java Cafe offers coffee bar-style coffee and cakes during the day and beer and cocktails at night. Bimini Grill and Topsiders serve beer, daiquiris, margaritas, and piña coladas. The Havana Cigar Club is exactly what the name implies – a place for smoking and drinking good malt whiskys. There is a special occasion menu for room service that includes a selection of cold or deluxe hors d'oevres, a jumbo shrimp platter, Caspian sea caviar, and a collection of international cheeses with different breads.
Norwegian Dawn has everything a cruiser desires, making it a perfect option for a delightful getaway. Since May 2015, the Norwegian Cruise Line charges US$7,95 for room service dining. This is an extra service charge implemented fleetwide (including on the NCL Dawn ship). Passengers exempted from the new (uncommon for the industry) room service fee are only the occupants of “The Haven” suites. Still, as an exception, all passengers can order (for free) their room-service morning coffee and Continental Breakfast. After implementing the new service charge, NCL upgraded the room service menu, adding more hot food items for Breakfast and a wider food & drinks selection (available for ordering 24 hours a day).
My biggest disappointment was the seaday that preceded our crossing of the equator - a first for me - as there were no activities to mark it. I did have a meeting with Cruise director to talk about this and she said that the ship did not have the correct health and safety protocols in place to do anything. She said it would be impossible to produce certificates to mark the crossing but several days later a generic certificate was in fact delivered to each cabin. This was blamed on a high tide and a shallow navigation channel both factors that were known about in advance. There was an outbreak of some sort of gastro enteritis on the ship after about 3 days and restrictions in the buffet were still in place when we left the ship 18 days later. Both of us were ill so NCL made a profit from us as it cut down our appetites for food and drink.
On all four corner are hot tubs, for adults only, two of them with roofs. Near the pool is the Topsiders bar, which serves drinks and ice cream, and the Bimini Grill, which serves burgers and hot dogs. On one end of the pool area is a stage where, on sea days, a band plays Caribbean tunes. Some nights, the pool area turns into a party zone with a DJ, dance, and drinks. Le Bistro is one of Norwegian's high-end specialty restaurants, definitely the spot to celebrate an anniversary with a romantic dinner It is located on Deck 6 Midship, right by Gatsby's and La Cucina. Being one of the more sophisticated restaurants on the ship ($20 cover charge per person, excluding drinks) the expectations are high, but the restaurants lives up to it.
Behind these areas are the locker rooms with showers, saunas, and steam rooms. Before the renovations, these rooms were also available to the gym users. One deck above the pool you’ll find a number of sun chairs lined up and waiting. If you can’t find a place for your sun worshiping, just ask a crew member where to find more chairs, or try the Bimini Bar. A terrace right under the the bar provides more sun chairs, with view of the pool and the Garden villa.
